Safety First
This is a piece of equipment I’ve never had to use on board a yacht—the life raft.
I’ve only operated one during training at a center in the UK, where we practiced deploying the raft and using the equipment inside. Such training is mandatory for anyone wishing to work as a commercial yacht crew member in the UK or Europe, ensuring that crew can lead passengers to survival in case of emergency.
Today, I conducted the regular inspection of Macondo’s life raft. I was present in person to check all onboard equipment and consumables, including: medical kit, emergency drinking water, dry rations, seasickness tablets, manual pump, sponge, bailer, signal mirror, parachute flares, and handheld flares. However, I noticed the inflatable radar reflector was missing, so I purchased and added one myself to comply with UK yacht safety standards.
Taiwan’s yacht safety regulations remain unclear and lacking in many areas. This is something worth striving to improve.
Holding ourselves to high standards is the first step.
