Mama
Joanne is incredibly sharp—she picked up the basics of sailing in no time.
Even though she struggled with seasickness, she kept trying to participate in every maneuver.
Time and again she fell, and time and again she stood back up, slipping back into her foul-weather gear with quiet resolve.
Throughout the journey, she constantly praised those around her.
If you ever sail alongside her, you might start believing you’re destined to become a great mariner yourself.
“I want to have two kids,” she said.
“That way, when we fly, we can sit in the middle row—with one child on either side of us.”
On the island, Joanne was like a mother to the rest of us—three grown-up kids tagging along.
She guarded our bags on the beach, reminded us in the car to stop, look, and listen at every intersection.
She read children’s books about sailing aloud in cafés.
She hoisted the sails with us, drew in our logbooks with us, pointed out dolphins at sea, and helped us dream about the future—together.
This year, my own mother asked me:
“Have you become yourself yet?”
Yes, Mama.
Thank you.
I’ve found my own shape.
And a free soul.
I think I can feel it—
I believe Joanne will bring more lucky, brave, and free souls into this world.
May you always carry the wind of blessing with you. Sail on.
