Kim

280NMI – Offshore Mileage Building / Session 11 – the Oar and the Shovel

When Kim was in high school, she experienced the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. That year, she decided to forgo further education and joined the military, choosing to stand on the front line in defense of her country, serving as a combat medic in a special forces unit.

Through years of military service, she witnessed both the strength and the limitations of the system. After leaving the service, she gave herself time to explore anew, searching for another path to protect the land she loves.

Before joining our course, Kim was volunteering for a recall campaign. In our student group chat, she openly kept her nickname — “Kim votes YES on the recall.”

That, indeed, takes courage.

The courage to take a stand.

The courage to engage in dialogue.

The courage to take responsibility.

It reminds me of a line from the Netflix series Black Sails:

“The ghost told him to take up an oar and walk inland. Walk until someone asks, ‘What’s that you’ve got there?’ And when he says, ‘It’s an oar,’ they say, ‘What’s an oar?’ Because in that place, the sea has never hurt anyone. That’s where he’ll find peace.”

Kim said she hopes to one day join Doctors Without Borders, to go even farther — a path that may be hard, and may be long.

But wherever the future takes her, I hope:

Kim will always carry the courage she had while sailing.

And that none of us will ever let the oars in our hands become shovels.
